Island Kayaks began life on the Isle of Skye in 1999 as part of the climbing and outdoor equipment specialists, Island Outdoors, based in Portree. In 2002 the firm developed its first production model, the Island Kayaks Expedition, followed by the Newt, a kayak for young paddlers introduced in 2004. The Expedition LV, a reduced volume version of the popular Expedition, and the Qaarsut, a mid-volume Greenland style inspired kayak were introduced in 2005.

All Island kayaks are made in Sri Lanka by Island Kayaks Lanka in a purpose-built workshop. Island is a very young company with a very serious desire to be the best at what they do.
